Getting the right bricks

Matching an existing house

Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Finchley 7 m long and 0.9 m high: 6.3 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 397 bricks, roughly 1 pack of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.37 tonnes of building sand and 4 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

How delivery works in Finchley

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Finchley is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
  • Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.

Your questions answered

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.

Can you match my existing bricks?

Often, yes. Send the brick name if you have it, or a daylight photo of a clean face with a tape measure for scale. We will look for the nearest match in current ranges and can usually arrange a sample before you commit to a full order.

Do you deliver bricks to trades and homeowners in Finchley?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Can I add other materials to my Finchley delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
