Take a garden wall in Devon 7 m long and 1.2 m high: 8.4 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 530 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.5 tonnes of building sand and 5 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Delivery to Devon: what helps
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Devon.
- Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
- Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
- For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
Bricks: choosing well
Matching an existing house
Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
