Choosing bricks
Colour consistency
Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
How much will you need?
Take a garden wall in Brixton 9 m long and 1.2 m high: 10.8 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 681 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.64 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Delivering bricks in Brixton
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Brixton is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
- Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
- In summer Brixton gets around 16h 38m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
Bricks in Brixton: questions
Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?
Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
Do you deliver bricks to trades and homeowners in Brixton?
Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
Can I add other materials to my Brixton delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
How are bricks delivered?
In strapped packs on a flatbed lorry, normally unloaded by the lorry's crane. Tell us where the packs can go and whether there are overhead cables, low branches or soft ground.
