Picking the right product
Ballast or separate sand and gravel?
All-in ballast is convenient for general concrete. For more control over the mix, use separate sharp sand and gravel.
Gravel size
20 mm gravel suits concrete and drainage layers; 10 mm and pea gravel suit bedding pipes and paths.
Getting ballast and gravel onto your Portishead site
Bulk bags are usually lifted off by crane where access allows; tell us where they can sit and whether the ground is firm. Portishead is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.
- Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
- In summer Portishead gets around 16h 38m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
