Getting ballast and gravel onto your Hertfordshire site
Bulk bags are usually lifted off by crane where access allows; tell us where they can sit and whether the ground is firm. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Hertfordshire.
- For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
- Pallets left on a pavement can block the footway, so plan a drop point inside your boundary where you can.
Ballast & Gravel: choosing well
Gravel size
20 mm gravel suits concrete and drainage layers; 10 mm and pea gravel suit bedding pipes and paths.
Decorative areas
Lay decorative gravel over a weed membrane and a firm base so it does not sink.
Ballast & Gravel in Hertfordshire: questions
How much ballast for a cubic metre of concrete?
Roughly 2 to 2.2 tonnes of all-in ballast with about 15 bags of cement at a 1:5 mix. Our concrete calculator works out your slab or footing.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Hertfordshire?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
How much gravel do I need for a path?
Multiply the area by the depth (often 40 to 50 mm for decorative gravel) to get cubic metres, then allow about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
Can I add other materials to my Hertfordshire delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from ballast and gravel to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
