Estimating your ballast and gravel

Getting ballast and gravel onto your Cumbria site
Bulk bags are usually lifted off by crane where access allows; tell us where they can sit and whether the ground is firm. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Cumbria.
- If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.
- Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
- Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
Picking the right product
Ballast or separate sand and gravel?
All-in ballast is convenient for general concrete. For more control over the mix, use separate sharp sand and gravel.
Decorative areas
Lay decorative gravel over a weed membrane and a firm base so it does not sink.
Your questions answered
What gravel do I bed drainage pipes in?
Pea gravel or a similar clean single-size gravel is commonly used around underground pipes.
Do you deliver ballast and gravel to trades and homeowners in Cumbria?
Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
How much gravel do I need for a path?
Multiply the area by the depth (often 40 to 50 mm for decorative gravel) to get cubic metres, then allow about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
How soon can ballast and gravel be delivered in Cumbria?
We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.
