Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

Quantities: a worked example

A 3 × 3.6 m room with one door has about 12.4 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 13.6 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.
