Getting the right planed timber

Nominal versus finished size

Planing takes material off, so a timber sold as 'nominal' 2 × 4 finishes smaller. Always check finished sizes when you need an exact fit.

Softwood or MDF trim?

MDF skirting and architrave is very straight and paints well; softwood takes knocks better and can be stained.

How delivery works in Derry/Londonderry

Finished timber is protected and handled with care; tell us if it needs to go inside out of the weather. Deliveries to Northern Ireland include a sea crossing, so we quote each order individually.

• If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
• On busy streets in Derry/Londonderry, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
• In summer Derry/Londonderry gets around 17h 22m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.

Estimating your planed timber

A 3 × 4 m room with one door has about 13.2 m of wall to skirt. With 10% for joints and offcuts that is 14.5 m, or 4 lengths of 4.2 m skirting, plus architrave for each side of the door.

Your questions answered

Can you deliver planed timber to a site with restricted access in Derry/Londonderry?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

How should I store planed timber?

Flat, off the ground and inside if possible, so it does not take on moisture and move before fitting.

Can you match an old skirting profile?

We can look for the closest current profile. Exact matches for old or bespoke profiles may need machining to order.
