PIR Insulation Boards: choosing well

Fire considerations

PIR is a combustible product. Building regulations restrict combustible materials in some situations, such as external walls of taller buildings; check what applies.

Sealing joints

Tape the joints with foil tape so the foil layer works as a continuous vapour control layer where the design relies on it.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Planning the drop in Whitefield

Boards are light but bulky; they travel in wrapped packs and should be stored flat and dry. Whitefield is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

• Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
• Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
• Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.

Working out quantities for your Whitefield job

Insulating 30 m² of rafters, floor or wall takes 12 boards of 2400 × 1200 mm including offcuts. The thickness depends on the U-value you need, so check it before you order. Try the insulation calculator

PIR Insulation Boards questions

What is the foil for?

The foil facing reflects heat, protects the foam and, when joints are taped, can act as a vapour control layer.

Do you deliver PIR insulation boards to Whitefield?

Yes. We deliver across Whitefield, including M45, M25, M26, BL9. Whitefield is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

Can I add other materials to my Whitefield delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from PIR insulation boards to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

How thick should PIR insulation be?

It depends on where it goes and the U-value required. Pitched roofs often need 100 mm or more between and under rafters; floors and walls vary. Use the maker's U-value tables or ask your designer.
