Lay and compact in layers with a plate compactor. Allow extra material because it compacts down.

How deep?

Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.

Sizing your order

A 5 × 6 m area at 100 mm compacted is 3 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 6.9 tonnes, or around 9 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator
