Things to check before you order
How deep?
Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.
Virgin or recycled?
Recycled Type 1 can be a good option where it meets the specification; ask what your project or local authority requires.
Delivery to Maesteg: what helps
Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. Maesteg is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
- Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
Quantities: a worked example
A 4 × 5 m area at 100 mm compacted is 2 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 4.6 tonnes, or around 6 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator
MOT Type 1 Sub-base questions
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Maesteg?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
How deep should a driveway sub-base be?
Around 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is common for domestic drives on firm ground; soft ground or heavier vehicles need more. Follow your installer or the paving maker's guidance.
Can you deliver MOT Type 1 to a site with restricted access in Maesteg?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
What is the difference between Type 1 and scalpings?
Type 1 is graded to a specification so it compacts into a strong, stable layer. Scalpings are less controlled and suit less demanding areas.
