Choosing MOT Type 1
How deep?
Patios and paths commonly use around 100 mm of compacted sub-base, and domestic driveways around 150 mm or more. Soft ground or heavier vehicles need more; your designer or installer will confirm.
Virgin or recycled?
Recycled Type 1 can be a good option where it meets the specification; ask what your project or local authority requires.
Estimating your MOT Type 1
A 5 × 4 m area at 150 mm compacted is 3 m³. At about 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre plus 10% that is 6.9 tonnes, or around 9 bulk bags. Try the sub-base calculator
Getting MOT Type 1 onto your Carrickfergus site
Bulk bags are usually crane-offloaded where access allows; very large quantities can be priced as loose tipped loads where access allows. Deliveries to Northern Ireland include a sea crossing, so we quote each order individually.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
- Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
- If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
Your questions answered
How deep should a driveway sub-base be?
Around 150 mm of compacted MOT Type 1 is common for domestic drives on firm ground; soft ground or heavier vehicles need more. Follow your installer or the paving maker's guidance.
Does Type 1 drain?
Type 1 is reasonably free-draining when compacted, which is one reason it is used under drives and patios.
Is there a minimum order for delivery to Carrickfergus?
There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
Can you deliver MOT Type 1 to a site with restricted access in Carrickfergus?
Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.
