Metal or timber?

Metal studs are straight, light and do not shrink or twist; timber is easier for fixing heavy items and is more familiar on domestic jobs.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Sizing your order

A 9 m metal stud partition at 600 mm centres needs 16 studs and 18 m of track, plus boards and self-drilling screws. Taller walls may need deeper studs or closer centres; follow the system maker's tables.

What is an MF ceiling?

A suspended plasterboard ceiling built from steel channels hung from the structure above, used to create a flat ceiling below an uneven soffit or to hide services.

Are metal studs better than timber?
