Estimating your carcassing timber

A floor 3 m wide with joists spanning 4.2 m at 400 mm centres needs 9 joists, plus trimmers and noggins. The section and grade, such as 47 × 200 mm C24, come from span tables or your engineer; send us the timber schedule and we will price it.

Picking the right product

Cut ends

Treat any cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative, especially on external work.

C16 or C24?

C24 is stronger and stiffer, so it can span further or use a smaller section. Span tables and your structural drawings decide which grade and size you need.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Before your Southend-on-Sea delivery arrives

Timber is delivered in packs or bundles on a flatbed; long lengths need clear access along the drop point. Southend-on-Sea is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
  • Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.
  • In summer Southend-on-Sea gets around 16h 39m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.

Ordering carcassing timber for Southend-on-Sea: FAQs

What sizes of joist do I need?

That depends on the span, spacing, loading and grade. Use span tables or your engineer's design; building control will check.

Why is my treated timber green or brown?

The colour comes from the preservative. It fades over time and does not tell you how well the timber is protected; the use class does.

How soon can carcassing timber be delivered in Southend-on-Sea?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

Do you deliver carcassing timber to trades and homeowners in Southend-on-Sea?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
