Getting the right carcassing timber

C16 or C24?

C24 is stronger and stiffer, so it can span further or use a smaller section. Span tables and your structural drawings decide which grade and size you need.

Cut ends

Treat any cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative, especially on external work.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

How much will you need?

A floor 3 m wide with joists spanning 4.2 m at 400 mm centres needs 9 joists, plus trimmers and noggins. The section and grade, such as 47 × 200 mm C24, come from span tables or your engineer; send us the timber schedule and we will price it.

Delivery to Northampton: what helps

Timber is delivered in packs or bundles on a flatbed; long lengths need clear access along the drop point. Northampton is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Give us the full postcode for the drop point; deliveries around NN1 are priced to the exact address.
  • In summer Northampton gets around 16h 47m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • On busy streets in Northampton, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.

Common questions from Northampton

What lengths are available?

Common lengths run from 2.4 m to 4.8 m in 300 mm steps, with longer lengths to order.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Northampton?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

Do you deliver carcassing timber to trades and homeowners in Northampton?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Why is my treated timber green or brown?

The colour comes from the preservative. It fades over time and does not tell you how well the timber is protected; the use class does.
