Before you order carcassing timber
C16 or C24?
C24 is stronger and stiffer, so it can span further or use a smaller section. Span tables and your structural drawings decide which grade and size you need.
Cut ends
Treat any cut ends with a suitable end-grain preservative, especially on external work.
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
Delivering carcassing timber in Brentwood
Timber is delivered in packs or bundles on a flatbed; long lengths need clear access along the drop point. Brentwood is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
- Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
- If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.
Sizing your order
A floor 4.2 m wide with joists spanning 3.6 m at 400 mm centres needs 12 joists, plus trimmers and noggins. The section and grade, such as 47 × 200 mm C24, come from span tables or your engineer; send us the timber schedule and we will price it.
Common questions from Brentwood
Do you deliver carcassing timber to Brentwood?
Yes. We deliver across Brentwood, including CM14, CM15, CM13. Brentwood is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.
Why is my treated timber green or brown?
The colour comes from the preservative. It fades over time and does not tell you how well the timber is protected; the use class does.
Do you deliver carcassing timber to trades and homeowners in Brentwood?
Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
What does C16 and C24 mean?
They are strength classes under BS EN 338. C24 timber is stronger and stiffer than C16, which lets it span further for the same size.
