Bricks are fired clay or concrete masonry units; the UK standard size is 215 × 102.5 × 65 mm, which lays at about 60 bricks per square metre of single-skin wall.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Scottish Borders 9 m long and 1.05 m high: 9.45 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 596 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.56 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Before your Scottish Borders delivery arrives

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Our standard mainland delivery area covers Scottish Borders.

  • Mention any overhead cables, low branches or narrow gateways, because they decide whether a crane offload is possible.
  • Have someone on site for the delivery if you can, or agree a safe drop point with us in advance.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.

Choosing bricks

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or the council's building standards service may specify one.

Matching an existing house

Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Common questions from Scottish Borders

How soon can bricks be delivered in Scottish Borders?

We confirm the delivery date when we price your order, before you commit. It depends on the product, the quantity and whether it is a stock line or made to order.

How many bricks come in a pack?

It depends on the manufacturer and the brick. Packs of 400, 475 and 500 are common. We confirm the pack size with your price so you can order whole packs.

How many bricks are in a square metre?

With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.
