Bricks: choosing well

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

Matching an existing house

Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Leicester 9 m long and 1.05 m high: 9.45 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 596 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.56 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Delivering bricks in Leicester

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Leicester is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
  • On busy streets in Leicester, a parking suspension or a quiet time slot can make offloading safer, so tell us about local restrictions you know of.
  • If the site is up a shared drive or behind other houses, tell us the distance from the road.

Your questions answered

Which bricks go below the damp-proof course?

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.

Can I add other materials to my Leicester delivery?

Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.

How are bricks delivered?

In strapped packs on a flatbed lorry, normally unloaded by the lorry's crane. Tell us where the packs can go and whether there are overhead cables, low branches or soft ground.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Leicester?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
