Things to check before you order

Colour consistency

Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.

In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.

Delivering bricks in Lancaster

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Lancaster is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • In summer Lancaster gets around 17h 09m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
  • Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Lancaster 8 m long and 1.2 m high: 9.6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 605 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.57 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Your questions answered

How are bricks delivered?

In strapped packs on a flatbed lorry, normally unloaded by the lorry's crane. Tell us where the packs can go and whether there are overhead cables, low branches or soft ground.

Do you deliver bricks to trades and homeowners in Lancaster?

Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.

Can you deliver bricks to a site with restricted access in Lancaster?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

How many bricks are in a square metre?

With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.
