Choosing bricks

Is the wall exposed?

For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).

Engineering Class A or B?

Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or the council's building standards service may specify one.

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Johnstone 6 m long and 2.1 m high: 12.6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 794 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.74 tonnes of building sand and 7 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator

Getting bricks onto your Johnstone site

Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Johnstone is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • If the drop point is block paving or soft ground, say so; heavy pallets and bulk bags can mark or sink.
  • Tell us the best drop point, such as a driveway, front garden or the kerb, and whether a lorry can park close to it.
  • Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.

Common questions from Johnstone

Can you match my existing bricks?

Often, yes. Send the brick name if you have it, or a daylight photo of a clean face with a tape measure for scale. We will look for the nearest match in current ranges and can usually arrange a sample before you commit to a full order.

Do you deliver bricks to Johnstone?

Yes. We deliver across Johnstone, including PA5, PA10, PA9, PA6. Johnstone is inside our standard mainland delivery area. Send your list or call 0800 088 6341 and we will price it delivered to your postcode.

Do you sell bricks in small quantities?

We price whole packs as standard because that is how bricks leave the works. For small repairs ask anyway: we will tell you honestly whether part packs are possible for the brick you need.

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Johnstone?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.
