Choosing bricks
Colour consistency
Order everything for one job at the same time so the bricks come from the same production run, then mix from three or four packs as you lay to blend any variation.
Engineering Class A or B?
Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
Quantities: a worked example
Take a garden wall in Felling 10 m long and 1.2 m high: 12 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 756 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.71 tonnes of building sand and 7 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Getting bricks onto your Felling site
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Felling is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- Clear a level area for pallets, ideally on boards, so materials stay out of standing water.
- Weight limits on bridges or private roads near the site matter for larger lorries, so mention any you know of.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.

Below DPC you need bricks that cope with constant damp and frost: engineering bricks, or clay facings declared F2 and S2. Concrete bricks are another option for below-ground work.
