Picking the right product
Is the wall exposed?
For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).
Engineering Class A or B?
Class A is the denser of the two and is usually chosen where strength or very low water absorption matters; Class B is the common choice below DPC and for manholes; a brick DPC course in a building needs Class A (DPC1). Your designer or building control may specify one.
In England, building work is checked against the Approved Documents, for example Part A for structure and Part L for energy efficiency, through your council's building control team or a registered building control approver.
Getting bricks onto your Bedford site
Bricks come in strapped packs, usually on a pallet, and are lifted off by a lorry-mounted crane where the drop point allows. Bedford is inside our standard mainland delivery area.
- For a phased build we can split the order so materials arrive as each stage starts, which keeps the site clear.
- Keep cement, plaster and boards dry: have a tarpaulin or a garage space ready before they arrive.
- If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
Sizing your order
Take a garden wall in Bedford 10 m long and 1.05 m high: 10.5 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 662 bricks, roughly 2 packs of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.62 tonnes of building sand and 6 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
Questions about bricks delivery in Bedford
Can you match my existing bricks?
Often, yes. Send the brick name if you have it, or a daylight photo of a clean face with a tape measure for scale. We will look for the nearest match in current ranges and can usually arrange a sample before you commit to a full order.
How many bricks are in a square metre?
With standard 215 × 65 mm bricks and 10 mm mortar joints you need about 60 bricks per square metre for a single-skin (half-brick) wall and about 120 for a one-brick-thick wall. Add around 5 percent for cuts and breakages.
Can I add other materials to my Bedford delivery?
Yes. Put everything on one list, from bricks to fixings and PPE, and we will price it as one delivery where the products can travel together.
Do you deliver bricks to trades and homeowners in Bedford?
Both. Trades can apply for a trade account; homeowners and self-builders can order on a delivered quote.
