Picking the right product

Matching an existing house

Bring us the brick name if you know it, or a clear photo of a cleaned face in daylight with a tape measure for scale. Size matters as much as colour: older imperial bricks are often slightly larger than 65 mm.

Is the wall exposed?

For walls that will get very wet and freeze, such as parapets, copings, below DPC or free-standing garden walls, use a clay brick declared F2 (freeze-thaw resistant) and S2 (low soluble salts).

In Scotland most building work needs a building warrant from the local authority, assessed against the Building Standards Technical Handbooks.

Quantities: a worked example

Take a garden wall in Ayr 4 m long and 1.5 m high: 6 m². At 60 bricks per square metre plus 5% for cuts that is 378 bricks, roughly 1 pack of 500 depending on the maker, laid in about 0.35 tonnes of building sand and 4 bags of cement at a 1:4 mix. Try the brick calculator
