Choosing ballast and gravel

Ballast or separate sand and gravel?

All-in ballast is convenient for general concrete. For more control over the mix, use separate sharp sand and gravel.

20 mm gravel suits concrete and drainage layers; 10 mm and pea gravel suit bedding pipes and paths.

Before your Swindon delivery arrives

Bulk bags are usually lifted off by crane where access allows; tell us where they can sit and whether the ground is firm. Swindon is inside our standard mainland delivery area.

  • In summer Swindon gets around 16h 39m of daylight, but early deliveries still beat the traffic and give the longest working day.
  • If neighbours share the access, it helps to let them know a lorry is coming.
  • Deliveries are to the kerb, drive or within crane reach; ask if materials need to go further.

Ordering ballast and gravel for Swindon: FAQs

Is there a minimum order for delivery to Swindon?

There is no fixed minimum. For very small orders we will tell you honestly if the delivery cost outweighs the materials, so you can decide.

Can you deliver ballast and gravel to a site with restricted access in Swindon?

Usually, yes. Tell us about the access when you ask for a price and we will plan the vehicle and offload, or say if a smaller vehicle is needed.

Do you deliver ballast in bags?

Yes, bulk bags for most jobs and small bags for small quantities or tight access.

How much gravel do I need for a path?

Multiply the area by the depth (often 40 to 50 mm for decorative gravel) to get cubic metres, then allow about 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre.
